Kentucky Coffee Tree

Gymnocladus dioicus

Kentucky Coffee Tree is a slow-growing, architecturally striking native tree unlike anything else in the landscape, with enormous, bipinnately compound leaves — the largest of any native North American tree — that create a bold, tropical texture through summer before dropping to reveal a dramatic, sculptural winter silhouette of stout, contorted branches. Exceptionally tough and adaptable to poor, compacted, and alkaline soils, it thrives in urban conditions where more delicate trees fail. Its large, leathery seed pods add further ornamental interest through the winter months.
