Berberis trifoliolata

Agarita is a tough, evergreen native shrub with a bold, spiny character that belies the delicate clusters of small, fragrant yellow flowers it produces in late winter and early spring, among the earliest blooms of any native plant in the Texas landscape. Growing 4–8 feet tall, its distinctive, holly-like leaves in a striking blue-green to gray-green color provide year-round structure and texture in even the harshest, driest conditions. Bright red berries follow the blooms in spring, attracting birds and wildlife while also making a delicious wild jelly beloved by generations of Hill Country residents.
