Cotinus obovatus

American Smoketree is a stunning, large shrub or small tree that earns its evocative name each summer when its spent flower clusters transform into billowing, smoke-like plumes of feathery pink and purple that seem to hover above the foliage in a dreamy, ethereal haze. Growing 10–15 feet tall with a broad, rounded form, its rounded leaves emerge in rich shades of green or deep burgundy depending on the variety, before transitioning to spectacular shades of orange, red, and purple in fall. Exceptionally tough and adaptable, it thrives in poor, rocky, well-drained soils with minimal care once established.
