Chinkapin Oak
Quercus muehlenbergii
Chinkapin Oak is a handsome, moderately fast-growing native oak distinguished by its elongated, sharply toothed leaves that bear a striking resemblance to those of the American chestnut, giving it a bold, distinctive texture rare among native oaks. Growing 40–60 feet tall with an open, spreading crown, it provides ample shade and produces sweet acorns highly prized by deer, turkey, and other wildlife. Exceptionally well-suited to the limestone bluffs and rocky uplands of the Texas Hill Country, it is a rewarding and underutilized landscape tree.
