Curly Mesquite
Hilaria belangeri
Curly Mesquite (Hilaria belangeri) is a low-growing, mat-forming native grass that spreads by wiry runners to create a dense, durable groundcover well suited to dry, rocky soils throughout Central and West Texas. Reaching only a few inches tall, its fine, curling blue-green blades form a tight carpet that handles foot traffic and grazing with ease, making it a popular choice for low-water lawn alternatives and naturalized open areas. Remarkably tough once established, it requires little to no supplemental irrigation and thrives in the heat and alkaline soils that challenge many traditional turf grasses.
