Little Walnut

Little Walnut is a tough, moderate-growing native tree of the dry canyons, rocky slopes, and stream margins of West Texas and New Mexico, where it adds a lush, finely textured presence to otherwise austere landscapes. Its small, pinnately compound leaves cast a light, dappled shade, and its tiny hard-shelled nuts, while modest in size, are keenly sought by squirrels and other wildlife. Highly adapted to rocky, alkaline soils and drought, it is an excellent choice for naturalistic and xeriscape plantings that call for a rugged, character-rich native tree.
