Texas Persimmon is one of the most ornamentally distinctive small native trees in the state, prized above all for its extraordinary bark which is smooth and peels in thin layers to reveal a gleaming mosaic of white, grey, and charcoal that is nothing short of sculptural. Slow-growing and perfectly scaled for courtyard gardens, rock gardens, and intimate landscape spaces, it produces small black fruits in late summer that are irresistible to birds and mammals, including white-tailed deer. Its evergreen to semi-evergreen habit and extreme drought tolerance make it an ideal low-maintenance native specimen for the Texas landscape.
