Sideoats Grama is a tough, clump-forming native bunchgrass and the official state grass of Texas, prized for its distinctive flowering spikes that line up neatly along one side of each slender stem like tiny oats hanging from a fishing line. Growing 1 to 3 feet tall, its narrow blue-green foliage turns a warm copper tone in fall and provides season-long texture in prairie restorations, naturalized meadows, and low-water landscapes. Exceptionally drought tolerant once established, this resilient warm-season grass thrives in rocky, alkaline soils and offers valuable forage and habitat for grassland birds and pollinators alike.
